West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced plans to file an FIR against former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for purportedly breaching conditions set by the Calcutta High Court during a TMCP rally. The group led by Mamata Banerjee had not provided a response at the time of reporting.
In Kolkata, the current West Bengal Chief Minister, Suvendu Adhikari, announced on Saturday that an FIR would be filed against his predecessor, former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. This action concerns an alleged breach of a Calcutta High Court directive during the foundation day rally of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), the student wing of the Trinamool Congress, which took place last Friday.
The Calcutta High Court had granted conditional approval for Mamata Banerjee’s faction to hold this rally in central Kolkata. However, there were claims that several of the court‘s stipulations, particularly the requirement to keep one lane open for traffic while restricting the rally to the other lane, were not adhered to.
Adhikari addressed media personnel, emphasizing that these conditions were visibly flouted. “The court clearly instructed us to conduct the rally while ensuring one lane remained open for traffic. Instead, the former Chief Minister gathered people, leading to both lanes being blocked. I’ve instructed the police to file an FIR on this matter and to approach the Calcutta High Court for further action. This issue will not be overlooked,” he stated.
Ritabrata Banerjee, leader of the dissenting faction within the Trinamool Congress and the current Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, supported Adhikari’s claims about the breach of the High Court’s conditions during the rally.
Banerjee remarked, “The High Court had specified a limit on participants and ordered the event to be confined to a single lane. Yet, we saw the former Chief Minister urging her followers to break through barriers and occupy the entire road. Such behavior is deeply ingrained.”
As of the report‘s completion, there had been no response from Mamata Banerjee’s faction regarding these allegations.
During her speech at Friday’s rally, Mamata Banerjee criticized the current Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led state government. She asserted that its overreach would ultimately facilitate the Trinamool Congress’s return to power in West Bengal. “Ordinary BJP supporters will soon teach their leaders a lesson. Very soon, Trinamool Congress will reclaim power in West Bengal,” she declared.
