6 Dead, 11 Rescued After 50-Year-Old Building Collapses in Delhi’s Satya Niketan

Tragedy in Delhi’s Satya Niketan as a multi-storey building collapse leaves 6 dead and 11 rescued. Search and rescue operations remain underway at the site.
NEW DELHI — At least six people have died and eleven others have been rescued after a multi-storey building collapsed on Sunday afternoon in southwest Delhi’s Satya Niketan area. Emergency teams continue to work around the clock to clear mounds of concrete and debris in a search for any additional trapped occupants.
The structure—a five-storey building operating as a paying guest (PG) accommodation named “Hostel Daze”—came crashing down around 1:30 PM near Delhi University’s South Campus. The site is a popular residential hub primarily inhabited by college students.

Massive Multi-Agency Emergency Response

Disaster response operations were launched immediately following the collapse. Personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Fire Service, Delhi Police, and the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) arrived on the scene with heavy machinery, search dogs, and specialized rescue tools. Local residents and student volunteers also assisted in the initial efforts, using basic tools and hands to move rubble before heavy equipment reached the narrow lanes.
Overnight operations led to the recovery of multiple individuals from under the heavy masonry. Out of the eleven people pulled out, six were pronounced dead at local hospitals, including the AIIMS Apex Trauma Centre and Safdarjung Hospital. Several survivors are currently receiving treatment for severe injuries.

Cause of Collapse and Legal Action

Preliminary investigations suggest the structure was roughly 50 years old and was undergoing internal repair work and basement modifications at the time of the incident. Heavy seasonal rainfall in the days leading up to the collapse may have further compromised the building’s structural integrity.
The Delhi Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against the building owner and operator. Authorities are tracing the individuals managing the property to hold them accountable for potential structural and safety violations.

Government Inquiry & Strict Action Planned

The local administration has ordered a formal magisterial inquiry to determine the exact cause of the failure and identify potential negligence. Officials confirmed that strict regulatory enforcement will follow, targeting unauthorized constructions, illegal floor additions, and commercial conversions lacking proper structural safety clearance.
Search operations at the site remain active as teams carefully clear the remaining structural remnants to ensure no victims are left unaccounted for.
