A major security breach unfolded in Jammu after a 21-year-old drug addict escaped from a nearby police post, scaled a wall, and trespassed into J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s official residence.
JAMMU — A major security scare erupted at the official residence of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wazarat Road after a 21-year-old man managed to scale a boundary wall and trespass onto the premises in broad daylight.
The incident occurred while Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was away in New Delhi for official meetings.
Escape from Police Custody Lead to Breach
According to police officials, the intruder, hailing from the Reasi district, had been picked up by a team from the nearby Gujjar Nagar police post under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
His parents arrived at the station to arrange for his release on bail. However, when the police station in-charge instructed the father to bring a local resident as a guarantor, the youth panicked. Fearing that his father might not return, the young man slipped out of the police post unnoticed.
He subsequently climbed a small hillock adjoining the station, scaled the rear wall of the adjacent Chief Minister’s official residence, and entered the compound.
Intercepted by Special Security Group
Personnel belonging to the elite Special Security Group (SSG)—the specialized force tasked with protecting the Chief Minister and his immediate family—spotted the intruder shortly after he entered the property.
The SSG officers swiftly apprehended the individual and handed him back over to local police for interrogation.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the youth was a substance abuser with no links to terror organizations or malicious intent toward the Chief Minister. He was subsequently charged with criminal trespass and released on bail.
Security Concerns Raised
Despite the absence of terror ties, the incident has drawn sharp concern regarding the security protocols protecting top officials in the region. Ruling National Conference leaders have previously expressed worry over security arrangements for Omar Abdullah and his father, Farooq Abdullah, making this perimeter failure a point of heightened scrutiny.
