Trump observed that less than one percent of voters in India utilized postal ballots during the recent general elections, with every voter possessing a valid photo identification.
Washington: US President Donald Trump has referenced India’s election system and voter ID protocols while renewing his call for the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act. This legislation aims to introduce stricter citizenship requirements for voting in US elections.
On his Truth Social platform, Trump mentioned that India’s Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, recently questioned the US administration on the lack of mandatory photo identification cards in American elections. Trump used this example to advocate for photo ID requirements for all US voters, aiming to minimize “electoral fraud.“
Trump highlighted that less than one percent of voters in India used postal ballots in their recent general elections, with every voter possessing a valid photo ID.
“Earlier this month, India’s Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, asked our Administration — How can you have Elections in the US without a valid Photo ID,” Trump wrote.
Through these remarks, Trump sought to garner support for the SAVE America Act, which would mandate Americans to provide proof of citizenship for voter registration, enforce a nationwide voter ID requirement, and significantly restrict mail-in voting.
In India’s recent election, 646 million people participated, with less than one percent voting by mail. Every voter was required to show a valid photo ID. “We need to pass the SAVE AMERICA ACT now,” he emphasized.
Sergio Gor Supports Trump US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, expressed his support for President Donald Trump’s push for strict nationwide voter ID laws through the SAVE (Safeguard American Voter Eligibility) America Act.
Using India’s 2024 general election as a model for voter authentication, Gor backed Trump’s view that solid, universal photo identification is crucial for upholding election integrity and aims to reform American election practices by highlighting the scope and method of India’s voting system.
In a post on X, Gor stated, “President Donald J. Trump is absolutely right! In India’s last election, 646 million voters required an ID. Congress should enact
THE SAVE AMERICA ACT!”
About the SAVE America Act
The Republican leader has been advocating for the SAVE America Act, asserting it would address issues of electoral fraud. The bill was introduced on January 29, yet disagreement persists between Democrats and Republicans, and the U.S. Senate adjourned for a five-week recess earlier this month without any decisive action toward its progression.
According to the White House, the legislation aims to ensure that only U.S. citizens have the power to influence federal elections.
The White House remarked that “American citizens—and only American citizens—should decide American elections,” characterizing the SAVE America Act as a sensible, bipartisan initiative.
Proposed legislation requires voters to provide valid identification before registering for a federal election, along with proof of citizenship.
Additionally, it suggests limiting mail-in ballots to circumstances involving illness, disability, military service, or travel. The White House emphasized that the Act requires states to remove non-citizens from voter rolls.
The administration also highlighted a comparison of U.S. election procedures with those of other countries, pointing out that America falls behind in implementing what it considers fundamental election safeguards.
“India and Brazil connect voter ID to a biometric database, whereas the United States mostly uses self-attestation for citizenship,” the White House noted.
