Mirzapur expands the gritty universe of the popular web series into a compact but thrilling cinematic experience. While the film retains the violence, ambition and ruthless power games that made the original series popular, it also introduces new characters, locations and conflicts that push the story beyond familiar territory.
Produced by Excel Entertainment and crafted by writer Puneet Krishna and director Gurmeet Singh, the film stays firmly rooted in the dark world established years earlier. This time, however, the story stretches beyond Mirzapur to the sweeping dunes of Rajasthan, particularly Jaisalmer, giving the narrative a visually striking new dimension.
A New Challenger to Kaleen Bhaiya
One of the film’s major additions is Babban “Babua” Yadav, played by Ravi Kishan. A powerful drug supplier from Jaisalmer, Babban enters the story with ambitions of challenging Akhandanand “Kaleen Bhaiya” Tripathi and establishing his own dominance.
His alliance with Rati Shankar Shukla creates the foundation for a fresh power struggle. His connection with Zarina gives him valuable insight into Kaleen Bhaiya’s rise, further strengthening his determination to take control.
The Return of Familiar Faces
Kaleen Bhaiya once again remains at the centre of the story. His chilling voiceover establishes the film’s atmosphere from the beginning, reminding audiences of the brutal rules governing his empire.
The returning characters provide a strong sense of continuity. Because viewers are already familiar with their histories and relationships, the film requires little exposition. Instead, it quickly moves into its central conflicts and power struggles.
Munna’s complicated relationship with his father remains particularly important. His resentment over Kaleen Bhaiya’s perceived preference for Guddu and Bablu continues to influence his decisions, while his personal frustrations add another layer to his character.
Love, Loyalty and Betrayal
Beyond guns and political power, Mirzapur continues to explore the personal relationships that drive its characters.
Munna’s unrequited feelings for Sweety contrast sharply with the genuine relationship between Sweety and Guddu. Bablu’s feelings for Golu introduce another emotional thread, while Beena’s determination to gain greater control within the Tripathi household adds further intrigue.
The story also connects Mirzapur and Jaisalmer through characters such as bodyguards Maqbool Khan and Birju Lohar, whose relationship highlights the film’s recurring themes of loyalty, duty and unfulfilled love.
Verdict
Mirzapur delivers what fans expect—violence, power struggles, dark humour and profanity—but it also gives its characters greater emotional depth. The tense relationship between Munna and Kaleen Bhaiya, in particular, explores questions of family, loyalty and legacy beneath the violence.
Ultimately, the film succeeds because it doesn’t simply repeat the formula of the series. By introducing new characters and expanding the world geographically and narratively, it gives the Mirzapur universe a broader canvas while preserving its signature darkness.
Verdict: A gripping expansion of the Mirzapur universe that combines familiar brutality with new characters, conflicts and emotional layers.
